Report

Report:** Chris Owens retired 4-15 down in the second game.

Hosting a team packed with experience and talent, tonight’s home fixture against Old Pens was always going to be a tough proposition.

With Old Pens unable to field five players, the fifth string was a walkover for the home outfit. Consequently, Ben L’Smith stays green on the management dashboard, and all from the comfort of his own boudoir.

Lloyd, with one eye on the imminent arrival of progeny number two, was keen to play first. After losing the first game in a 6-15 reversal, Lloyd proffered the view that “Joe plays just like me, except a lot faster and a lot more accurately”. And so it proved, and before long Lloyd was back home with Mrs Lloyd and bump.

Over on court 2, Jack was working hard to prove that he could outrun light. Whereas Simon brought guile, experience and deception, Jack brought a new brand of physics and geometry. And it was not without a measure of success, as Jack salvaged a losing point from his 1-3 reversal.

Lewis’s first game against Chris could not have been tighter, with Lewis managing a 17-16 win. Unfortunately, with Lewis 14-5 to the better in the second set, Chris was unable to continue playing. Game to Chris. The management dashboard will have to be adjusted to accommodate such eventualities.

That left the prize money all on string 4. Having briefly played in the same team as Joel for Llanishen a few years back, I knew it was going to be tough. The first game was tough, went to the wire and was subject to perhaps a couple of avant-garde calls and a few meditations on the nature of time and space. Ultimately, Joel won out 15-13. The second game was a quieter affair as Joel looked to assert his dominance. At 14-10 up in the third, I dared to dream, only to have such dreams go the way of all misplaced hope, leaving melancholy regret in their wake.

Great night of squash, with Old Pens deserved winners. Well done lads. The evening’s crowning event was charcoaled sausages served in the local hostelry: proof positive that you can’t win them all.
