| Report: | Tonight’s fixture had the feel of an all-Newport affair, with Risca fielding two Rodney Parade exiles. After sinking Newport’s promotion hopes a couple of seasons ago, Newps were surely looking for revenge. Having rubbed my lucky rubber balls furiously since Monday, I was confident of a Risca win. In my mind, I had Lloyd having the edge over Get A Life Will; Jack having the perpetual-motion engine to grind out the win against The Alderley Sledge; and I was banking on Lewis managing to overcome the guile and experience of Use It Now Pete. At string 4, I felt my chances against Bracey were 50/50 at best; and at string 5, it was always going to be a battle over who had the best survival stories.
As it happens, any portents of victory that came to me in sleepy visions of splendour and bragging rights proved to be as vacuous as the promises of Brexit greatness. With Lewis narrowly missing out on a memorable comeback and a point apiece for Lloyd and Ben, the only consolation W was bagged by me.
With revenge purring contentedly in the collective laps of our friends from around the corner, it was off to the TA for beer and bantz. I’m looking forward to the return leg, by which time Risca may well have poached a few more players from yonder. I wonder whether Lewis Babbage is available?
