Names like Kilshaw, Greenaway and Hillman are not what you would expect to hear in South Central 3 but tonight they were, as the ‘Galacticos’ were in town, looking to chalk up their 9th win on the bounce in what might turn out to be the most straight forward promotion in league history!
The fixture got off to a great start with a five setter! The string 5 match, which was expertly reffed, [it must have been otherwise Anna would have kicked off!] swung one way, then the other and finally went the way of Old Pens thanks to some good squash by Old Pens old hand; Pat Westlake.
Thanks again to Tony for helping out, who had been rested due to injury on Sunday, only to be called up to play on Monday morning. A point in the bag early on and looking promising but eventually coming second to Rich Declaire in the 4th string match.
Next up was The Elvidge, ‘the flying doctor’, ‘spiderman’ whatever you want to call him, he’s been our banker this season. [I said ‘Banker’]. Tim didn’t disappoint, winning the 3rd string match 3-1 but admitted later it was “the first time this season he’d been done in”. Well done Rich Hine, demonstrating a superb level of fitness for his age!
Dan had been looking forward to a nice easy game against Chris, but with Kilshaw missing and Old Pens playing up, Alex Hillman was the opponent, a daunting prospect to say the least! This was the kind of game that would be on last on Match Of The Day as there were very few highlights as Alex comfortably dispatched the Cowbridge no2.
The balcony was full and the gathering crowd were eager to [had to] watch the no1 string game as Jenkins and Greenaway took to the court. Alex showed that he hadn’t lost his touch after a few weeks out, but the lack of game time was apparent in his little legs as he ambled around the court between rallies as if it were 2 all in games rather than 2 all in points! On another day it may have been closer but with the extra fitness, Chris kept up the pressure and won the game 3-1.
Match over, 4-1 to the Glacticos of South Central 3. In what might have been a disappointing night, the silver lining was a trip to the only place open on a Monday; good old Shampan for a curry and a cool pint of Cobra. Tidy! |
